Kick Counting Guidelines

  • Start counting after 28 weeks of pregnancy
  • Count at the same time each day when baby is usually active
  • All movements count: kicks, rolls, swishes, flutters (hiccups don't count)
  • Most healthy babies move at least 10 times within 2 hours
  • Contact your healthcare provider if you notice decreased movement or changes in pattern

The Kick Counter is an interactive tool to help you track your baby’s movements (kicks, rolls, flutters, swishes) during pregnancy.

Why Count Kicks?

Monitoring your baby’s movements is a simple way to check on your baby’s wellbeing. Changes in your baby’s movement patterns can sometimes indicate a problem that needs medical attention.

  • Start counting kicks after 28 weeks of pregnancy
  • Count at the same time each day when your baby is usually active
  • Most babies move at least 10 times in 2 hours
  • Track patterns of activity over time

When to Call Your Doctor

Contact your healthcare provider immediately if:

  • You notice a significant decrease in movement
  • Your baby doesn’t move 10 times within 2 hours
  • The pattern of movement has changed dramatically
  • You haven’t felt movement for several hours

Note: Every baby is different. Get to know your baby’s normal pattern of activity. What matters most is a change from your baby’s usual pattern.

What This Means

Kick counting is a simple way to monitor your baby's wellbeing in the third trimester. Here's how to use this tool effectively:

  1. Start counting when your baby is usually active (often after meals or in the evening)
  2. Get into a comfortable position (lying on your left side is ideal)
  3. Click "Start Counting" to begin
  4. Click "Count Kick" for each movement you feel (kicks, rolls, swishes, flutters)
  5. Note how long it takes to feel 10 movements

Most healthy babies will move at least 10 times within 2 hours. If it takes longer, try eating a snack and counting again. If you're still concerned, contact your healthcare provider.

Remember: It's normal for babies to have sleep cycles where they're less active. What's important is noticing changes from your baby's usual pattern.
